By now everyone knows about the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Redskins reaching a deal "unofficially" for Alex Smith, however this could be a sign of the Chiefs rebuilding and having a complete change throughout the team. There are more cuts to come if you can examine the numbers involved.
By dealing Smith to the Redskins, the Chiefs will be able to save around 14 million for their 2018 Cap hit. This serves them well since they are approximately 9.2 million dollars OVER the cap at the moment. They are without a 1st-round pick (dealt to Buffalo in 2017) and their 2018 Draft class should cost them around 3.7 million. The details of Smith's current contract are below:
This is just the beginning for the Chiefs. Expect Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali to be the next big name players that the Chiefs let go. The 35-year old Johnson will save the Chiefs 6 million and the 34-year old Hali will save them another 6, respectively. Both Johnson and Hali combined for 0 sacks in 2017, while Johnson played 76% of the snaps, Hali payed only 9.
