On the Clock: 2019 Cincinnati Bengals

The hourglass on Marvin Lewis finally ran out (by means of him stepping down) making way for Zac Taylor as the youth movement in the NFL continues.  Perhaps the Bengals are thinking that Taylor spending time with Sean McVay will somehow lead to greener pastures on the offensive side of the ball.  As any coach of the Dallas Cowboys will find out, working for a GM who has had multiple coaches could lead to some issues in acquiring talent.  Hopefully, Mike Brown (who has been at the helm in Cincinnati since Taylor was 8-years old) will allow him to make some moves to improve the Bengals in the AFC North.

Is John Elway the worst GM in football? This is a legitimate question that people should consider when looking at what the Broncos have done this off-season heading into the draft. The honest answer is, it depends on what Dave Gettleman does as a sequel to the Odell Beckham trade. That being said, Elway has made some head-scratching decisions during his nine years at the helm, especially at the quarterback position. That continued this off-season.

On the Clock: 2019 Buffalo Bills

The 2018 Buffalo Bills reached the level of expectations that I personally had for them in 2017. No one expected playoffs in their first year under Head Coach Sean McDermott, but while the 2017 Bills totally overachieved, the 2018 Bills were exactly what many thought they might be, in a word, inconsistent. But one of the several silver linings for the 2018 Bills team was rookie QB, Josh Allen. While there was a ton of inconsistent play, he showed what many had hoped for out of a franchise QB. While the 2018 team was severely hamstrung by the salary cap previous GM Doug Whaley had left the team in, first time General Manager Brandon Beane somehow got them out of cap hell and into a hugely advantageous spot.

One season after playing in the AFC Championship, the Jacksonville Jaguars have fallen on hard times...and back into the Top-10 of the NFL Draft.  A team that, on paper, seems poised to make a run again with a punishing ground attack and an even tougher defense, when you have Blake Bortles as your quarterback, there is only so much a team can do.  Now that one problem is solved, is 2019 the year where the Jaguars get back to their winning formula?

It wouldn’t be hard to make an argument that things have exploded for the Giants; it’s a popular argument to make right now. While there may be a population of Giants fans that are accepting of a team in transition, I can assure that you New York sports fans can only be patient for so long and even entering just his second season, General Manager Dave Gettleman looks to skating on ice as thin as a thin-crust pizza in Times Square.

What a start to 2018 it was, huh? "Fitzmagic" ran rampant in September (again) with wins against the Saints and Eagles, both of whom would win a game in the NFC Postseason. But, in typical Ryan Fitzpatrick fashion, he crashed and burned and so did the team around him, losing 11 of its last 14 games and finishing in the basement of the NFC South. With Jameis Winston still trying to figure out if he’s going to be a good quarterback or not and a great receiver in Mike Evans, the Buccaneers main focus will be fortifying the defense which finished sixth-worst in the league in allowing 383.4 yards per game last season.

On the Clock: 2019 New York Jets

The Jets finally landed who they hope to be their franchise QB in Sam Darnold in last years draft. But while the offense seemed to be making strides, the team fell apart to the tune of a 4-12 record. The collapse ultimately led to the unceremonious exit of Head Coach Todd Bowles and replacing him with another coach recently fired within the same division, Adam Gase formally of the Miami Dolphins.  The Jets undoubtedly have some studs on offense, notably Darnold. But is that enough to bring the Jets to the forefront of the AFC East?

After seeing your quarterback (Jimmy Garoppolo) and running back (Jerick McKinnon) go out, Kyle Shanahan had to scramble to put a workable offense together for the remainder of the season.  As a result, the 49ers are drafting 2nd in the 2019 NFL Draft.  While the 49ers have some explosive players in place, playing in a division with the Seahawks and the Rams the latter making it to the Super Bowl, is a tough task to take.  As Shanahan tries to get his program going and recapture some of the magic from the final weeks of the 2017 season, what are some of the obstacles facing San Francisco in 2019?

While the demise of the Arizona Cardinals after the departure of Head Coach Bruce Arians and Quarterback Carson Palmer was not much of a surprise, it was a bit shocking when Arizona fired Steve Wilks after just one season. Now, reloaded with Kliff Kingsbury as Head Coach, Arizona has been making enough moves to try and climb out of the basement of the NFL after a season nearly everyone wants to forget.
