After reviewing the Hall of Fame game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants, many questions arose as to the direction of the Bills and how the 2014 season will play out. The Buffalo Bills have question marks all over the field, and even off the field, with the 'bidding war' that is taking place as to who the new owner of the team will be. Just concentrating on the play on the field, there was a 'deja vu' aspect that reared its ugly head in Canton, Ohio this past weekend. What did you see when you watched the game?

For those of you who are Buffalo Bills fans, you have suffered since 1999 in the manner that you have not seen the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs, and when you truly examine the record of the team during that span, and a further breakdown of the statistics of the Bills, you can determine that it is harder for them to turn it around in the past 14 years. With all the talk centered around who will be making a 'bid' to own the Bills, and put up a new stadium, there has been little focus on players who are going to be leading the charge in 2014. More importantly, the commander and chief, Doug Whaley, and his pick to direct the defense, Jim Schwartz. The Bills have made some bold off-season moves, and especially on the defensive side of the ball, how is Schwartz's philosophy going to change the Bills? Mario "Game" Granata
As highlighted on some previous articles, the Buffalo Bills and Doug Whaley are turning the corner and making moves for that are hopefully going to pull the franchise out of the basement of the NFL. They are drafting well, added some depth, and have defenders on this team that are going to be impact players in the league. Here are a few points of the recent moves by the Bills. Looking at the Bills roster, and especially the defense that the Bills are looking at going into the 2014 season with, you would be hard pressed to argue against the fact that they are trying to end the longest playoff drought currently in the NFL. The "Architect" Doug Whaley, who is heavily rooted on the defensive side of the ball, is bringing in the Blue Chip players that the Bills desperately need, many of which are 1st and 2nd round picks. Make what you will about the Bills aggressive nature in the NFL Draft, the fact remains that they knew who the wanted and did everything they could to get him. As the days post-draft unfold, more and more stories are surfacing about just how relentless the Buffalo Bills actually were. Mario "Game" Granata
Residing in the 716 (Western, New York) as I do, there is a lot of talk about the Buffalo Bills off-season moves, more notably the failed re-signing of Jairus Byrd and the trade of Stevie Johnson. In Buffalo, the 2nd round pick, Byrd, was known as a playmaker, who amassed 22 interceptions during his career as a Bill. Stevie Johnson became a social media darling with the Bills Mafia, and was always good for a one-liner, and endeared himself to the blue-collar atmosphere of Buffalo, becoming a starter after being selected in the 7th round. So, why there may be some resentment in Buffalo, the moves that were made were for the best. Mario "Game" Granata
An idea that was echoed even before the 2014 NFL Draft took place, if the Buffalo Bills were to select Sammy Watkins with their first pick, would that mean the end of Stevie Johnson's career in Buffalo? That question was answered on Day 2 of the draft as Johnson was sent to San Francisco for a 4th round pick, and a move that left many of the Buffalo faithful questioning the move. Taking a look at the business end of the deal, it is apparent that the Bills are looking ahead. by Mario "Game" Granata
As the days wind down, and the weather is breaking in Western New York, the consensus around the 716 is that the Buffalo Bills, with all the talks around moving up in the draft to nab Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans (and even the pipe dream of drafting Jadeveon Clowney) it seems that the sexy pick and the more sensible one are at odds. Why would the Bills be better off not taking Watkins or Evans? by Mario "Game" Granata
Usually, around this time, the NFL Draft would be over, and fans and players alike will be dissecting playbooks and researching the newest members of their teams, but with the 2014 NFL Draft pushed into May, there is more time for teams to dot their I's and cross their T's before selecting players that will help their franchise. What does this longer time mean for fans and players alike? |
